ReligionIsBullshit.net

Religion is bullshit has an excellent description of atheism.

I like what the writer is saying about "denying god". Dumb fundies always want to way that I am denying god. I've never been able to put my finger on why this bugs me so much.

*Groan* It insists on focussing on a pet peeve of mine: the "strong" and "weak atheism" distinction. Seriously, I don't get it.

If I say "I don't believe in God" or "I believe there is no God" what blooming difference does it make to the strength. If I didn't know what a God was, I'd never be able to call myself an atheist. The only way I can describe myself as an atheist is if I've heard of this 'God' concept and don't think there is such a thing.

Naturally it's very different from agnosticism, since that's about knowledge. Atheism isn't about knowledge, it's just about beliefs. Hence why you can be both an atheist AND an agnostic.

I strongly believe that there is probably no God, but I don't think it would be possible to know for certain because the concept of God has been nicely defined to avoid anyone actually pinning it down with a refutation. (In other words: "Fine, your invisible, incomprehensible, omnipresent yet not terribly noticeable Being which defies all categories might well be out there. However, personally I'm not convinced.")

So yeah, the insistence that agnosticism and atheism have to be somehow opposed is another thing that really bugs me.
