They say that religious people volunteer more but this stat shows that few of them actually volunteer so they are just contributing to society by association... sorta like spiritual laundering. :)
It is true that fewer non-religious people volunteer. I'm not religious but I look out for the dude over the road. I have a cup of tea with him and listen to his stories. Stuff like this doesn't show up in their stats.
Volunteering that furthers the church shouldn't be counted either. If it is not of general benefit to society it isn't really social capital. Anyway, go have a look at the stats yourself. It's about halfway down the page.
